Overview & Directors
Dunstan Hospital was originally built in 1863. In 1878, due to a severe flood, the hospital was moved to higher ground, not far from the present site. Around the turn of the century a new large wooden hospital was built. The old wooden hospital was replaced in the 1950's, with construction completed in 1958. This hospital has given 47 years of services through various refits. The Breens Construction Co. commenced work in 2004 and the new hospital was opened by The Prime Minister Helen Clark on the 4th November 2005 The governance of the hospital has changed over the years in response to changing needs, medical advancements and Government policy. First there was the Central Otago Hospitals Board. Then came the Vincent Hospital Board. The Otago Area Health Board was created in 1988 and in December 2000 the Otago District Health Board (ODHB) came into being. The ODHB now holds overall responsibility for funding health services throughout Otago, and has a Central Otago representative on its Board. Until June 1999 services at Dunstan Hospital were provided by HealthCare Otago in Dunedin. They withdrew from this role, and so in July 1999 Central Otago Health Services Limited (COHSL) took over this role.
