General Ward

Visiting hours 11:00am to 8:00pm hours daily.
General medical services for inpatients include:
• General medical cases
• Coronary care
• Paediatric care
• Some convalescence cases
• GP referred accident cases for stabilisation and possible transfer
• Palliative medicine and terminal care

Central Lakes Child Development Service

Available through Occupational Therapy Services. Referrals will be accepted by phone, fax or mail to the service coordinator.
Services provided are the comprehensive assessment, treatment and programme co-ordination for children (0 to 15 years) with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability and their families. The service is provided in the home, community, school, pre-school or clinic.

Chemotherapy

Available through the hospital on a part-time basis. A message can be left for the chemotherapy nurse or she can be paged when on duty through the telephonist.
Services provided:
• A specialist chemotherapy nurse.
• Chemotherapy treatment.
• Monitoring of clients who have returned to the area following treatment in Dunedin.
• Pre treatment advice and follow up.
The chemotherapy nurse also acts as a resource person.

District Nursing Service

Available from 0800 hours until 1700 hours, Monday to Friday. If a nurse is unavailable a message can be left on the answer phone. Referral will be accepted from GP’s or self. This is a seven day a week service, but there are shortened hours on weekends and statutory holidays.

Laboratory Services

Available from 0830 hours until 1730 hours Monday to Friday, then on call basis. Appointments not necessary unless for mictagraph service (flow test) but a request form from GP or specialist etc required.
Services include:
Haematology
Provides a blood bank service
Mictograph service (flow tests)
Microbiology
Biochemistry
Fine needle aspirate clinic
Skin test for allergies

Medical Social Work Service

Available from 0830 hours until 1700 hours, Monday to Friday. If a social worker is unavailable a message can be left through the telephonist or on their answer machine.
Services provided:
• GP, specialist and inter-disciplinary referred Medical Social Work services.
• Coordination of some aspects of terminal and palliative care.
• Termination of pregnancy counselling.
• Assessment and coordination of Home Help.
• Assessment and coordination of Meals on Wheels.
• Needs Assessment and Service coordination of age-related disability.

Occupational Therapy Department

Available 0800 hours until 1700 hours Monday to Friday. If a therapist is unavailable a message can be left through the telephonist. Referrals will be accepted by phone, fax or mail by the service coordinator.
Services provided:
• Rehabilitation service to the General Ward.
• Arrangement of necessary equipment and housing modifications for both inpatients and outpatients
• GP, specialist and inter disciplinary referred outpatient treatments and education.
• A domiciliary service as required to all communities of the COHSL district from the service based at Dunstan Hospital.
• Pre-op and post-op domiciliary service, coordinating with the appropriate tertiary facility.
• Community groups.

Outpatient Clinic Department

Available 0800 hours until 1630 hours Monday to Friday. An appointment will be made following the receipt of a GP or specialist referral for the next available clinic space.
Outpatients nurses also carry out Electrocardiographs (ECO Doppler assessments and Holter monitoring on OP referrals.

Pharmacy Service

The pharmacy is open Monday to Saturday and a pharmacist is on call at all times. A full pharmacy service is provided to Dunstan Hospital by Budge’s Central Pharmacy in Alexandra.

• Inpatient dispensing or prescriptions
• Outpatient dispensing of prescriptions

Physiotherapy Service

Available from 0830 hours until 1430 hours, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 0830 hours, Tuesday and Thursday. An appointment must be made on a GP or specialist referral letter.
Services provided:
Inpatient service to General & Maternity Wards
GP, specialist and inter-disciplinary referred outpatients treatments and education.
Services are provided in the Alexandra/Clyde, Cromwell and Wanaka communities.
A domiciliary service as required to all communities.
In-service education to hospital staff on physiotherapy-related topics.

Radiology Services

Available from 0830 hours until 1430 hours, Monday, to Friday then on call basis. An appointment must be mad for non-urgent referrals from a GP or specialist etc.

Renal Dialysis Unit

All visitors wishing to use the renal dialysis unit located at Dunstan Hospital need to organise this through the Renal Dialysis Department in Dunedin Public Hospital.

Public Health Nurses

Available from 0800 until 1630 Monday to Friday, with an answer machine when out of office. Referrals will be accepted from any source.
Services are provided by registered nurses who:
Have extensive knowledge, expertise and experience in child and family health
Provide a free, confidential service to children, young people and their families/whanau
Have extensive knowledge of, and links with, child and family agencies in the community
Work with families/whanau to provide child health information and advice
Provide resources and child care health information to schools and early childhood centres
Offer Youth Health Clinics for young people in rural areas
Are available for care and protection advice and support
Are mobile and can visit families/whanau in homes, schools and early childhood centres
Provide vision and hearing screening
